How to scan local and live content in your Chrome browser.
Video Length: 2 minutes 10 seconds
Accessing the Chrome Extension
-
First, make sure you’ve requested access to the Chrome Extension for your Checker organisation. Once it’s enabled, your Customer Success Manager will send you a link to install it.
-
Once the extension is installed, open the content you want to scan in your Chrome browser.
-
Right-click anywhere on the page and select "Inspect."
-
In the Console bar, choose "Recite Me" (you might need to click the double arrows » to find it).
-
Then, log in to the extension using your Checker username and password.
When to use the Chrome Extension
- Unpublished Content - As long as your content opens in a browser window, you don’t need a live URL to scan it. This lets you check accessibility before publishing.
- Single Page Applications - On sites where the URL stays the same as users interact with content, the Chrome Extension can scan at any point. This means you can test accessibility throughout the user's journey by scanning after different actions or page changes.
- Secure Portals - If your site has a login-protected area, you can log in as usual and then open the Chrome Extension to scan the portal content. This means there's no need to share login details to perform accessibility checks.
- Updating Live Content - If you’re making changes to a live page, you can run a quick one-off scan using the Chrome Extension to make sure no new accessibility issues have been introduced.
Scanning Content
- Click "Scan Page" to start an accessibility scan of your current page.
- Any issues found will be shown by WCAG Technique.
- You can filter the results by WCAG Level and user role to suit your needs.
- Click the arrow next to a finding to expand it - this shows a detailed explanation of how to fix the issue and gives you the option to highlight the element directly in your browser.
- You can navigate through and highlight individual issues for a specific technique, or click "View All" to highlight all issues in that section at once.
- Note: For any issues detected that are not visible on the page, the Highlight tool may not always be able to show them directly in the browser.
